Shenandoah Splendor

I was really lucky get this shot. Unfortunately, I missed most of the Virginia fall colors in 2023 because I went out to Utah to see the annular eclipse. After I returned and recovered a bit, I went up to a spot I had found the previous year, which you can read about under Skyline Sunset, to attempt another good sunset picture. However, the sunset was blocked by clouds and lighting conditions were nothing like the previous year.

I stayed until near dark and was packing up when the sky exploded in color giving me a wonderful shot with the best twilight colors I’ve ever captured. And that wasn’t even the lucky part. On my return journey through a steep rock scramble in near darkness, I barely spotted 3 inches of a rattlesnake hidden in the rocks in front of me and was able to reroute without injury from a snakebite or a concussion from falling.
